The Unboxing Revolution – Packaging Design at its best
In 2005, as a recent graduate of the School of Packaging at Michigan State University, I was hired as a Structural Packaging Designer at Golden Bear Packaging in San Jose, CA. It was there that I fell in love with corrugated boxes and their never ending, and always evolving variations and uses.
About a defamed later a new craze had it the internet, Unboxing.
Unboxing is when someone records a video of themselves opening and revealing the product(s) inside the package. Often these videos are for tech products, but many other genres of unboxing are out there.
I remember designing several packages as a designer, that had the consumers unboxing experience in mind. What do they see first, is it neat and clean, compact, and the most cost effective way to show the product off.
Apple and its packaging come to mind for me. iPhones, iPads and other Apple products have always been packaged in such a way that is to offer a better experience to the consumer when opening the box. They have targeted it, and capitalized on the first interaction with the new product, making the box a top priority.
Today, at Huston Patterson, we make boxes, displays, folding cartons and many other forms of packaging come to life with high quality and large format offset printing. Utilizing presses with up to 8 colors along with in-line UV coating, we are able to create endless possibilities.
